As far as I can tell, steam is both an ingame interface (for chatting, screenshots, and videos) and a online game store, though it's though its known mostly for the latter. Games can be bought and immediately downloaded from steam, which also automatically keeps them all up to date. Games purchased from steam can also be backed up locally. (harddrive or dvd sized images)

If you have ever used Xfire, it is basically Xfire with a game store and a larger user base. (groups, or "steam groups", and things are much more common)

I hope this helps? I'm kinda crap at explaining things.

*I haven't used steam in a couple months because it won't connect for some reason, if there has been an update things may have changed a little from how I remember it.*

OIC, hmm i looked a bit on the steam website, and its just like Garena, its another platform to play games online(when battle.net wont work for ilegal copies, due to CD KEY invalidations) i play there with various nicks .Fate being the current 1, i play Warcraft3 and Starcraft, there are more games but my laptop dosnt really have the capacity to run them, games like Call of Duty 4 5 6, L4D, L4D2, AOE, AOEII, BattleField2, Counter Strike Souce-1.6 and 1.5, Red Alert 3, Team Fortress, and more

As the above has said. It's an Ingame Interface and a gamestore. Also some games need's steam to be able to play properly I think. Like games from Valve.

I like it. Good if you like to keep track of buddies whom you play games with! :3

As above post states, it allows you to track your friends and what they are playing, but only if they launched it through steam.

It's like a Messaging program, gaming manager, online store, and made for games with squad or team-like components because of it's really good VoIP.

I've used that beta since it came out. It's awesome! <3

Tho many (including me) had bugs and such when they started using it, shitload of bugs for some, just a few for the rest. That I think is fixed now tho so it should be ready to use without problems ^^

also now it's used for everyone who downloads or has it. (self update)

But the new one was refreshing and stylish!

I love the look of the new UI, I think it's cool

Also I like the fact that, and I don't know if any of you guys noticed this or if it correlates to it because it's probably coincidence, my download speeds on there have more than doubled recently.

:O
It isn't as bloody as the the ones from like europe? Shame, blood is awesome :O (Anything with blood in it is awesome!)
L4D 2 is a nice game indeed, but I prefer the first one. Better characters and better maps. Ghonna get those two games when I get my new comp in like 2 months.

Btw, was it anyone that got their hands on the CSS Beta? Was it any good if so?
Wasn't on steam at that time so I couldnt get it before it was closed.*sadface*

Yea black the gore was tuned down alot =(
Stupid australia board
Cuz when you use melee weapons lots of blood spurted out in the uncensored one =(
Now like almost no blood spurts out.
Thats why we resort to torrents =P
Lucky you can get the real version. I prefer lfd 2 as..... chainsaw ftw. Otherwise lfd1 is better. Im not very good at it though..... i only play with like one other friend so the other 2 are like nooby ai's.

Steam is only good for game that also related to Steam, CSS HL2, TF2
but if you get the option of buying the game separate, go for the stand alone,
sometimes, steam just gets in the way

Steam is just lik Xfire, lik said above

Over the years, my friends & I have held our own little closed circle lans. Steam sucks in terms of these lans. The protections it imposes kill off the potential of buying one copy of a game to play with friends at a lan, and the chances of me & my friends actually all having purchased the same game is pretty slim. So yeah, at our lans we typically end up playing older games (warcraft3, jedi knight II, etc) simply because none of us are going to shell out ~50$ each to get "that nifty game we'll play once before we decide its boring" and because older games often were setup just so you actually could buy one copy and host a lan with it, at least just to get your friends interested in playing it.

Aside from that, about the only thing steam does right for me is exposure to games. I've purchased numerous games just because steam happened to mentioned they were on sale and I had never quote gotten around to buying them yet. Aside from L4D, I've only used steam to get single-player games. I do like how they have rereleased some old classics (like xcom) in nicely maintained packages that install without concern even on new systems.
