One of my hard disk drive died

Post by HKO2006 » October 22nd, 2015, 8:32 am

My E:\, along with my Desktop, My Documents, My Pictures, My Music, uTorrent, >few dozens of useful utility programmes. Also forced me to create a new user for Desktop, My Documents, My Pictures, My Music folders are gone with the accident. e.g. Image vs newly created Image

Going to recovery centre tmr, hope the damage isn't great.

Then I check the remaining HDD with CrytalDiskInfo, both C5 and C6 is 4, do this matters?

Always have a backup and a backup of your backup! Having a RAID 5 solution helps a lot in this situation.

Have an offsite backup elsewhere, to a friend's house or another family member in case your house burn. It's costly but you will never lose anything that way!

Ya may use RAID in the future, HDD are a lot cheaper now than it was when I first learnt about RAID.
Didn't know too much though, so a wiki for myself.

Yes I do :)

I have RAID5 at home. Then all my data are on an external hard drive at my friend's place. He bring it over to synchronize data about every 3 months. I also have all my important data synchronized on my latop and a 128 GB USB key. My data is in 4 different places.

I do lose some bits because of "bit rot" but that should change soon when all of our filesystems is something like ZFS or BTRFS which are bit rot protected. Or like ReFS for Windows which is the successor of NTFS.

Mostly archive/personal things/applications. I wish I learn how to use cmd/code, let alone hack.

I do web development, computer support and I have a few backup of clients. I have almost a thousand passwords for me and my clients. I can't lose anything.

It happens once about 15 years ago, I lost around 10 GBs, that will never happen again now :-)
